Job description:
Job Description The best way to find out about the way we work at Fernville is to talk to a member of our GP team. Please get in touch with us and we can arrange an opportunity for this. Mail us at or call 01442 292701 Main elements of the job: • Each member of our GP team manages a patient list. As the “named doctor” you will be responsible for overseeing the care of your assigned patients. This continuity of care is much appreciated by our patients; and our doctors find it a very rewarding aspect of their work. • Our doctors each take a fair share of clinical work and other duties – partners and salaried doctors alike. But GP Partners have additional responsibilities for clinical management and leadership; and manage larger patient lists, reflecting their more extensive experience. • The work plan is built around the traditional 3-hour GP surgery, with a mix of face-to-face and telephone appointments. • Each morning, one doctor is responsible for home visits and visits to nursing homes. This doctor then returns to the surgery to become the “duty doctor” managing urgent appointments in the afternoon, and dealing with urgent prescription requests. • The duty doctor is assisted by a “buddy” to ensure we have sufficient capacity for same-day appointments and that the duty day does not become too arduous. • All doctors take a share of urgent appointments in the mornings, with slots reserved at the end of morning surgery to accommodate this. • You will participate in our rota for extended hours cover. From February 2019, this will be limited to Saturday mornings. You will be expected to provide an occasional Saturday morning surgery, and we pay an overtime rate for this work • You will be responsible for processing referral letters, hospital letters, test results and prescription requests for patients on your list. We have a system for covering the work of absent doctors; and you will be expected to participate in this. • You will be expected to maintain excellent clinical records; and support our work within the Quality & Outcomes Framework as well as our participation in a wide variety of Enhanced Services. • You will be expected to work within CCG and practice prescribing guidelines and ensure referrals to secondary care providers are managed appropriately. • You will be welcome to attend all meetings in the Practice at which doctors are normally present, including clinical and non-clinical meetings, and excluding only meetings that are designated for Partners only. Our requirements: • We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic doctor who will contribute to the very supportive team we have at Fernville. • You will be passionate about the care of your patients – supporting our commitment to the “family doctor” model of General Practice. • You must be clinically competent; but should also be able to recognise limitations and to seek advice where this is appropriate. • You may have special clinical interests, or expertise. We encourage professional development at Fernville and we are keen to develop the widest possible portfolio of skills within the team. • We strive to work hard, whilst maintaining an appropriate work-life balance and respecting personal or family needs. • Above all, you must be a good team-player. Our happy and highly-motivated team is our greatest asset.

Practice Overview
Fernville is a modern, expanding practice with an excellent reputation, located conveniently in Midland Road, close to Hemel Hempstead town centre. We are the oldest practice in Hemel Hempstead, established in the last century in a house close to the present site. We moved to our current premises in 1986, initially occupying the ground floor and later expanding to use the whole building. The premises have continually been improved to meet the demands of modern Primary Care. Fernville has been a training Practice for the last 15 years. Fernville serves approximately 17,000 patients, from all social classes and of all ages (although we have a higher than average number of elderly & very elderly patients). Many of our patients live in the two electoral wards with the highest morbidity ratios in the town for chronic diseases. Fernville is a busy Practice, and we take pride in our ability to provide appointments for urgent medical conditions same-day or (at worst) next-day. Our doctors, nurses and administrative staff work as an integrated team to serve our patients. We constantly strive to find new and better ways of delivering this service. Our multidisciplinary team now includes a Clinical Pharmacist and two Advanced Nurse Practitioners, who support the GP team with domiciliary visits as well as minor illness appointments. Fernville is committed to providing a high standard of care, efficiently. Fernville supports the broader healthcare community wherever possible. We provide medical services to 2 private schools and a number of residential homes. One of our doctors has a post as the locality Safeguarding Lead and our Managing Partner sits on the Board of our local GP Federation.
